Chinese Medicine tips for transitioning into Autumn

As the days start to get shorter, the temperature cools, and the leaves change colour, it's the perfect time to explore how Chinese Medicine can help with the transition. From reducing stress to supporting the immune system, what can Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) do to ease us through the seasonal change?

A whole body approach

It's important to note that TCM is a holistic approach to health. This means that it takes into account a person’s mental and emotional wellbeing in addition to physical health. Rather than simply treating the symptoms of an illness, TCM looks at the whole person. This can be particularly helpful during any seasonal change, especially as a reminder to slow down, eat seasonally, stay warm, and protect the immune system.

How are TCM therapies applied?

One of the most effective TCM practices for Autumn is acupuncture. Usually just a few acupuncture treatments can help our bodies adapt to the change of seasons. We may focus on strengthening the Qi of the Lungs and the Wei Qi, nourishing the Lung Yin fluids, or balancing the Qi of the whole body. One of my favourite points for autumn is LU 9, Tai Yuan, the Shu-Stream, Yuan Source and Earth point of the Lung channel. As the Earth point on the Metal Lung channel, this is an excellent point to tonify the Lung Qi and Yin, as well as to transform phlegm, and is particularly indicated for those who have a recurring cough and immune issues.

Another TCM practice that can be beneficial during the Autumn months is herbal medicine. It can help to strengthen the immune system, reduce stress, and improve overall wellbeing. Due to its long history of well known benefits, Chinese Herbs have also been adopted by Western Herbal Medicine. For this reason, I often have Chinese-derived herbs on heavy rotation in my liquid herbal dispensary eg. ginger, cinnamon, licorice, ginseng, chen pi, and astragalus, which are known to support the adrenals, immunity, energy levels, and blood circulation. They are also some of the better tasting herbs!

Diet & nutrition through Autumn

When it comes to TCM and autumn, diet and nutrition play a key role. Eating seasonal, local produce is a great way to support the body. Eating warming, nourishing foods such as soups and stews, as well as foods that are high in antioxidants and vitamins, can help to strengthen the body, moisturise and protect the skin, and support the immune system. It's also important to stay hydrated during the autumn months, so make sure to keep up fluids with plenty of water and herbal teas. Additionally, it's important to get plenty of rest and reduce stress as much as possible. This can be accomplished through meditation, Qi Gong, yoga, and other relaxation practices, such as laying down for acupuncture!
