Celebrating International Women’s Day

International Women's Day (IWD) is an annual celebration of the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. Every year on March 8th, women around the world come together to recognize and honor the progress made in gender equality, while also calling attention to the work that still needs to be done.

This year, IWD offers an opportunity for women of all ages, backgrounds, and experiences to come together and celebrate the strength, resilience, and courage of women everywhere. Whether you're celebrating with friends, attending a virtual event, or simply taking a moment to recognize the women in your life, IWD is a day to reflect on the progress we've made and how we can continue to move forward.

The History of IWD

IWD has been celebrated for over 100 years. The first celebration was organised by the Socialist Party of America in 1909, and by 1911, International Women's Day had become an official holiday across Europe. In 1975, the United Nations officially declared March 8th to be International Women's Day.

Since then, IWD has grown in popularity, with events, campaigns, and initiatives being held around the world to recognise and celebrate the progress made in the fight for gender equality. Ultimately, IWD is a day to celebrate the many accomplishments of women and to recognise the power of collective action.

How to Celebrate International Women's Day

The best way to celebrate International Women's Day is to recognise the amazing women in your life. Whether it's your mother, a friend, or a mentor, take a moment to thank them for their support and acknowledge their achievements. You can also show your support for gender equality by donating to a charity or organisation that works to empower women and girls.

In my clinical practice, I have the privilege of working with many amazing women – they share their stories, heartbreak, pain, and achievements with me. I am fortunate enough to be able to celebrate women every day in clinic, around my neighbourhood, in local women-run businesses, with friends, and in my home with my wild and wonderful little toddler, who I am raising to be a strong confident person.

How to Support Women Around the World

International Women's Day is a great opportunity to recognise and support the women in your life, but it's also a chance to show your support for women around the world. You can make a difference by donating to organizations that work to empower and educate women and girls, or by supporting businesses owned by women. You can also use your voice and platform to speak out against gender inequality and to promote gender equality around the world.

By supporting organisations that are working to end gender inequality, you can help to create a brighter future for women and girls everywhere. Even the smallest act of kindness or generosity can have a powerful ripple effect and help to create a more equitable world for everyone.
