What Happens During a Naturopathic Session?
I have to admit, before studying Naturopathy, I don’t think I really understood what the treatment process entailed or just how much science and research was involved. I am now heavily attached to the research component of my work and strongly believe in an evidence-based approach.
What is Naturopathy?
In broad terms, Naturopathy is a modality that supports the investigation of the underlying cause of health complaints. My clients always hear me say, ‘nothing in the body happens in isolation’ – there are many layers to a presenting symptom/s. Finding the underlying cause, and treating this alongside the frustrating symptoms, often lead to much better health outcomes. Various interventions are used to achieve improved health, including nutritional support, diet & lifestyle recommendations, herbal medicine (liquid, capsules, powders), and appropriate referrals to other qualified practitioners for a team effort.
The Consultation Process
Step 1. During a first session with me there is a discussion of the current health issue, a thorough health history intake, including family history, then a summary of any health goals that are a priority. Some goals may be as simple as having more energy when waking in the morning, or more complex, such as bringing down autoimmune markers and managing a complex inflammatory condition. I then give some initial recommendations to start with and sometimes a nutritional or herbal supplement to begin the process (but usually I wait until I have more information).
Step 2. The next step, if this hasn’t already been explored, is a referral for general blood work, either with a trusted GP or privately.
Step 3. Once these results come back, I make a thorough assessment and devise a treatment plan to last 1-2 months.
Step 4. This is usually conducted during a second consult. It involves a discussion and explanation on the findings, further diet and lifestyle advice, supplements, and a timeline for follow-up testing to monitor progress.
*I should note that I often combine acupuncture treatment in follow up sessions if it is requested by a client or if I think a combined approach would lead to quicker and/or better outcomes.
Who Benefits Most from Naturopathic Treatment?
I would say that the ideal candidate for Naturopathic treatment is anyone who is interested in investigating the root cause of their health concern. Education is key, so my clients will always get a full rundown on how their symptoms came about in the first place and what they can do to help manage their health issues on their own for more sustained and long term outcomes.
The Most Common Presentations I see in Clinic:
Thyroid disorders
Preconception, fertility plans, and pregnancy support
Acne, eczema, and rosacea
Allergies
Food reactions
Bloating, indigestion, and constipation
Anxiety and stress
Painful conditions
Hormonal imbalances, PMS, and menstrual irregularities
… just to name a few
Every practitioner has their special interests and may adopt a varied list of modalities in their practice approach. Regardless of the ‘how’, it is most important to feel like your health goals are being valued and there is a strong level of understanding, compassion, and inclusivity. I always recommend a free discovery call when searching for the right fit.
